Children get sick, cars do not start, and shifts change at the last minute. Every dental office knows this. What makes the difference is not the reason you cannot come, it is how early you say so.

Call as early as you know

The moment you are fairly sure you cannot make it, call. Two days out, the office can usually offer you something reasonably close and give your original slot to a family on the waiting list. Two hours out, both of those become much harder.

You do not need a good excuse. Nobody is grading the reason. A short call is all it takes.

Why the empty chair matters

About one in five online bookings does not show up. When a family does not come and does not call, that hour cannot be given to anyone else, and somebody who needed to be seen that week waits longer. Calling turns a wasted hour into someone else's appointment. It is the single most useful thing a family can do for the office, and it costs a minute.

Ask for the waiting list

When you move an appointment, the new time is often further out than you would like. Ask to be added to the call list at the same time. Cancellations happen daily, and offices call the list before they release the time publicly. Families who ask get moved up; families who do not, wait.

If your child is sick on the day

Call rather than deciding on your own, and let the front desk tell you whether to come. Some things are fine to come in with and some are better rescheduled, and the team would rather answer that question than have you guess. If the visit needs to move, they will move it while you are on the phone.

If you have missed one already

Call and book the next one. A missed appointment is not a mark against your family and it does not close any doors. The only thing that makes it worse is letting months pass because of an awkward phone call that nobody on the other end is thinking about.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fee for cancelling?

Our offices do not charge families for calling to move an appointment. Ask the front desk if you have questions about your specific plan.

How much notice is enough?

Twenty four hours is the usual standard and lets the office fill the slot. More is better, and even an hour is better than nothing at all.

Can I reschedule online?

The website is built for requesting new appointments. To move an existing one, call the office directly. It is faster and you leave the call knowing the new time is confirmed.

What if I need to move all my children at once?

Say so at the start of the call. It is easier to find one block for everyone than to move them one at a time, and the team can look for a slot that keeps them together.

The short version

Call as soon as you know, ask for the call list, and do not let one missed visit turn into a missed year. The reason never matters as much as the notice.
